Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the 20th largest city in the United States. It has a 2006 estimated population of approximately 664,342 as of January 2007. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County, and is located in the south-central part of the state in the Piedmont region, near the South Carolina border. There are many public and private golf courses, county parks, two major lakes with combined shoreline of over 900 miles. There are many major sports teams such as The Charlotte Panthers Football, The Charlotte Bobcats Basketball and NASCAR. Charlotte has just added the U.S. Olympic Whitewater training grounds. The Blue Ridge Mountains are less than 3 hours away and the beach is found within 3 1/2 hours east.
The city's economy has and is continuing to mature starting in the 1990s and continuing through the 2000s to become dominated by financial services such as Bank of Amercia Headquarters and Wachovia Bank Headquarters, as well as retail commerce such as Belks Clothing and Harris Teeter Food Stores. Charlotte is also a Hub and Headquarters for U.S. Airlines. According to 2006 estimates, Charlotte is the 5th fastest growing among large U.S. cities as well as the fastest growing city on the East Coast.
The Queen City, Charlotte was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, wife of King George III of the United Kingdom. During the American Revolution the British Commander in the Southern Colonies, General Cornwallis, occupied Charlotte but was driven out soon afterwards by the fierce opposition of the city's residents to British rule. Cornwallis famously wrote that Charlotte was "a hornet's nest of rebellion", leading to another city nickname: The Hornet's Nest.
The Charlotte metropolitan area had a census estimated population of 1,583,016 in 2006. As of 2006, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Salisbury combined statistical area (CSA) had a population of 2,191,604. Charlotte's elevation is 748 feet above sea level (at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport).
Uptown Charlotte, so named because it sits atop a long rise between two creeks, was built on the gunnies of the St. Catherine's and Rudisill gold mines. There is disagreement about the reason the term "Uptown" is used for the center city area. Prior to the late 1980s, the term "Downtown" was always used as a reference for Charlotte's center city area and many area residents still use the "Downtown" term.
